![]() ![]() So, it looks like the 60k interval is probably OK.īut, we should probably carry this convo over to a ZF9 maintenance thread rather than continuing it in the proprietary 6 speed DIY thread. I told them about the 30k language you mentioned (I haven't looked for it myself yet) and they were surprised and agreed it might be an accidental port over from the proprietary 6-speed. Of course, these intervals depend on your driving style and they were not sure if Acura's MID determines the change time based on driving behavior. While they recommend we just follow the manual's recommendation of doing the service when the MID notification arises or by a severe interval because they don't want us to accidentally void our warranty with Acura, generally their fluid is recommended to be changed at 60k for more severe conditions like cities and hills, and 100k for more freeway style driving. I tried to message ZF again about the fluids, but got some error message, so I'll send another message to confirm what their recommendation is on the ZF Lifeguard 9 fluid.ĮDIT: Ok I spoke to ZF's tech side (forgot I have their phone number lol). I also mentioned that doing at higher intervals like 60k is probably just fine for most people, considering the cost of the fluids and how ZF tends to run lifetime fluids. But, like in our prior convos, city driving is considered "harsh" for some folks, so it's a subjective call there. Make sure and see if the language states that interval is for harsh driving conditions, like towing regularly. I haven't seen the 30k language in my manuals (I may just have bad memory), but if it's there, I have this odd feeling that Honda didn't think to change their ATF change recommendation when they switched from the proprietary 6 speed to the ZF9. If you find a good way to do it, please get back to us. I though I've seen people using an automotive app on their phone/tablet (with the OBDII connector), or the Scangauge/X-gauge. There might be other ways to monitor the ATF temp. However, how would someone know how much of a difference in temperature there should be between the fluid and transmission case? To check the temp, he used an infrared thermometer and pointed it at the transmission case or pan. I thought that I did see a video of a mechanic doing an ATF change on a different ZF transmission (BMW if I recall correctly) it was similar in that the transmission had a fluid level plug that had to be opened once the fluid was up to the proper temp. Since it looks like you'd be one of the first to DIY an ATF change on the ZF9, it doesn't look like alternatives to using the HDS scanner to monitor the fluid temperature have been shared and posted. You probably saw in the other ATF thread that neoshi had posted the ATF change procedure for the 9 speed. I'm open to any comments, questions, criticisms, etc. I'm not sure when I'll attack the cabin filter maybe one of these days. ![]() I also picked up an engine air filter and wiper blade refills while I was there. The oil, filter, multi-point inspection, and wash/vacuum isn't too bad of a deal. ![]() I actually did bring the car in to the dealership for the oil change. The process of changing the ATF in the 6 speeds is very DIY friendly and appears to be a bit easier that that of the 9 speed ATs. The fluid didn't appear to be in the greatest shape when it drained out. If I have time, I might try to squeeze in another ATF drain and fill. While the wheels were off, I used my impact driver to remove the rotor screws and coat them with anti-seize as well. I also did the tire rotation, but I didn't think it was worthy to document. ![]() I also ended up removing the large phillips head screw and did the same.Īfter bringing the vehicle back down on the ground, I took it for a test drive around the block and the car drove as expected. They already had a little bit of rust on them. Prior to reinstalling the bolts for the underbody shield, I threw on some anti-seize on the threads. I reinstalled the metal underbody shield here. ![]()
